Each project I take on is unique, but ultimately, my work focuses on helping companies and organizations get to the core of who they are, then designing thoughtful strategies for them to captivate both new and existing audiences.

I do this for early-stage tech startups, as well as more established organizations, across a wide variety of sectors. Creative agencies also turn to me to partner on client work as a trusted collaborator.

The through-line of it all? The kinds of companies I team up with: those at the intersection of business and purpose, building products and services that seek to truly improve life for those they serve. NAMING + NOMENCLATURE

A great name evokes curiosity, telling a simple truth about who you are as a company - and getting there is a journey. I research linguistic roots, pore through obscure reference materials, and winnow through pages of free association in order to sift out a few gems. Then, do it all over again. While the process of finding your exact right moniker takes time, once we get there we’ll know it: it’ll sing.
 

CONTENT + COMMUNICATIONS

It’s simple: Language is the means by which ideas are brought to life - and with 15+ years of professional content experience, and a masters in creative writing, it also happens to be a central part of my toolkit. I can take on everything from UX copy, websites, social media content, investor decks, and press releases, to long-form articles, video scripts, manifestos, keynote speeches, and more.

Your brand isn’t just your look or your logo - it’s who you are as a company, expressed at every single customer touchpoint. To begin to give shape to that identity, first I zoom out, and engage in a comprehensive discovery process. Then, I zoom in and dive deep, hunting for pearls. It’s those unexpected little insights, found far below the surface, that allow us to discover your true differentiation.

Internal teams get stuck in habitual thinking - cycling around in the same feedback loops, over and over. But, bringing in the "fresh eyes" of someone who isn't already part of the conversation can uncover surprising new solutions - and results. Turn to me for help developing new products and services, leveling-up existing user experience flows, and conceiving of novel product features.

Creative projects split apart in two halves - concept and execution - and my job is to function as an intermediary between the two. Need to develop a memorable campaign, promotional item, event, or other kind of special project? I’ll scout around in the abstract, uncover the best concepts, then fashion them into solid ideas, built to forge a meaningful connection back to your brand.

CREATIVE PRODUCTION

Starting a large-scale or multi-track creative project from scratch can feel daunting, especially if it's not your area of expertise - but, I got you. From developing a detailed creative brief, all the way through to ensuring final deliverables are on-time, on-budget, and seriously on-point, I manage production, end-to-end, collaborating closely with my trusted network of talented partners.

Drawing from 15+ years of marketing and communications experience, I've managed to winnow my skills down into a suite of six creative services that you can read more about, up above. You can also download my CV and check out my LinkedIn for a bit more background, as well.
 

AS A CONSULTANT, DO YOU ONLY PROVIDE HIGH-LEVEL RECOMMENDATIONS, OR DO YOU ACTUALLY DO THE WORK ITSELF?

My services are strategic, tactical, and very much hands-on. That means you can expect me to generate ideas, turn them into strategic plans, then roll my proverbial sleeves up to get the job done.


WHAT SETS YOU APART?

Having always worked at the axis of product / marketing, and coming with a strong arts background, I'm fluent in the abstract world of ideas, as well as their practical application. My magic comes from the ability to both dream big, but also see a project through, from concept to completion.

WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED? 

These days, I'm somewhat nomadic. I roll through San Francisco and Los Angeles on the regular, but given that I work remotely, at the moment I could be just about anywhere.

WHY DO YOU WORK REMOTELY?

I’m a night-owl who needs nearly monastic silence to concentrate, so traditional business hours and loud, open-plan offices just don’t optimize for my productivity. By working on a remote basis, though, I have the ability to only begin working at times, and in environments, where I'm certain that I'll be able deliver my best possible output. This article pretty much nails it. 


I'M A BIT WARY OF WORKING WITH SOMEONE REMOTELY. DO YOU EVER MAKE AN EXCEPTION AND WORK ONSITE?

On occasion, I do. But I’ve been working in a remote capacity with 98.9% of my clients for four years now, and am confident in my ability to produce excellent work without us needing to sit in the same building. Or even the same time zone, for that matter. We'll have at least one synchronized check-in each week, and daily email / Slack communication, so at any given moment, you'll know exactly what I'm up to, and when I'll deliver by. ¡Zero mystery!
 

WHERE ARE YOUR CLIENTS LOCATED?

Most of the organizations I work with are in and around the San Francisco Bay Area, but I’ve also contracted with companies from Australia, Canada, France, Switzerland, Hong Kong, and Israel - so am accustomed to hopping on calls at ridiculous hours, without issue. As long as you and your team are up to interesting things, I'm happy to join forces, no matter where you're located. 
 

HOW I WORK.


WHO HIRES YOU?

The majority of my clients fall into these 3 categories:

  • Startup Founders - With a fully-built-out team not yet in place, CEOs or VPs of early- stage companies bring me on in true startup fashion: to tackle pretty much everything, all at once - and I bring it. 
     
  • In-House Department Heads - Whether the department head of a more established organization seeks ongoing, senior-level help, or just temporary bandwidth to drive stalled projects forward, I jump in, tackle the task at hand, and deliver solid value to the team. 
     
  • Creative Agency Folks - Strategy and creative leads reach out when they need fresh eyes and a crisp, new perspective on their client projects. As a trusted partner, I drop in, go deep, and do my part to help make their agency shine.

The above spells out what most of my work looks like, but I'm open to clients of all sorts (minus industries like oil, arms, gaming, and adtech). I also happily offer a 25% discount to certified non-profit organizations. 
 

HOW DO YOU STRUCTURE YOUR ENGAGEMENTS? 

I work on a monthly retainer, with a three month minimum, preferring to work with clients looking to develop long-term partnerships. After exploring various options, I’ve found this model to be the most transparent, results-driven, and win/win for the type of hands-on client work that I love to do.

Note that for creative production work, I charge on a project basis, and for work with creative agencies, I work on an hourly basis. I also offer one-off consulting sessions for those who want to work with me, but can’t commit to a three month retainer. If interested in learning more, please reach out, below, and I'll be happy to discuss my rates and availability with you.
 

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL ENGAGEMENT LOOK LIKE, WEEK-TO-WEEK?

While some people opt to bring me on for more time than this, my standard contract breaks down to 60 hours a month (15 hours a week). While, at first, that may sound just shy of two days worth of work each week, the net is far more than that, given that these are fully-dedicated, head-down work hours - without any breaks included.

In the end, my weekly output likely even rivals that of a full-time, in-house employee. While their on-the-clock hours each week are clogged with things like meetings, calls, emails, Slack, socializing, lunch breaks, coffee breaks, snack breaks, bathroom breaks, and, uh, Instagram breaks, when you're working with me, you're paying for something actually quite different: 100% productivity.
 

HOW MANY CLIENTS DO YOU WORK WITH AT A TIME?

Very few. Having worked for most of my career on the client side, I know very well what it is to hire someone for a pretty penny who makes big promises at the outset, but ultimately fails to deliver. For this reason, I generally take on no more than 2 hand-picked clients at a time, to ensure that I'm able to provide each with the undivided attention that they deserve.


SO, WITH CREATIVE PRODUCTION AS ONE OF YOUR SERVICES, YOU'RE KINDA LIKE A FULL-SERVICE CREATIVE AGENCY?

Not exactly. By renting a physical location and carrying full-time staff, agencies need to take on many clients, and charge premium rates, just to 'keep the lights on'. I, on the other hand, am much more agile, only pulling in design, video, illustration, and photography partners, as needed. Ultimately, that means that I can produce just about any creative project that you might turn to an agency for - and, likely, for a far more affordable budget.  
 

NICE BASKET OF SKILLS, ALLI - BUT, WHAT DON'T YOU DO?

Performance marketing. I don't manage analytics dashboards, optimize conversion funnels, or engage in any other form of 'growth-hacking', though can certainly develop the creative for your digital ad campaigns. If you're looking for the above services, however, I have folks that I can gladly connect you to, and/or collaborate with, as needed.

Drop me a line, below, and I'll take it from there. If it makes sense to, we’ll set up a call, and should you decide to move forward with me, I'll send over my standard 2.5 page contract. Then, once you sign it and send it back my way, it's settled: I'm all yours.
